Course on Community Health in Pakistan

Course on Community Health in Pakistan

  • High Estimated prevalence of Mental Health Problems
  • The indicators of public health and primary health care (World Health Report 2007) show that large segment of population do not have access to clean and safe drinking water, education, immunisation against communicable diseases. The other indicators having indirect impact on mental health are poor maternal health, high infant and maternal mortality and morbidity rates.
  • Untreated depression and high suicide rates particularly in young unemployed highlighted in media reports.
  • Most of the recognised mental health care in Pakistan restricted to few urban centres e.g. 17 out of 22 districts in Sindh province do not have any Psychiatrist.
  • Even in developed countries >80% of mental health problems treated in Primary Care

This course would be aimed at primary care physicians and other allied professions, especially in remote areas, in order to improve awareness and management of common psychiatric disorders in the community.

How do we do it?

Group Work

Group 1 – What is already there?
a) Include community support systems, examples of community mental health services already in existence b) current undergraduate / postgraduate training in community psychiatry
Group 2 – Who should we aim this course at?
a) Include current care patterns/pathway in less developed districts b) identify potential beneficiaries of the course c) identify the incentives that will attract them to do such a course
Group 3 – Who should we choose as partners/sponsors?
a) To make the course more attractive b) To enable the participants to enrol without much obstruction c) to receive logistic support and resources d) to ensure continuity/sustainability e) for local capacity building
Group 4 – What should be the Course Contents?
We must be realistic and practical but agree on a minimum recognised standard
a) What should be the knowledge component? b) What should be the skills component? c) What should be the experience component? d) Do we need any other components?
