BPPA's report on earth quake relief efforts in Pakistan and Kashmir

British Pakistani Psychiatrists Association (BPPA) has a membership of 340 Psychiatrist working in UK who are of Pakistani origin. We have, in collaboration with other medical and voluntary organisations working in UK for the earth quake victims in Pakistan and Kashmir, set up a steering committee to coordinate the relief effort.

here is an update of what we have been doing over the last two weeks:

  1. BPPA in collobaration Sind Medical College Association UK have facilitated, so far, in sending team of 8 orthopaedic surgeons, one plastic surgeon, two anaesthetists, one A&E consultant and an Associaciate specialist in A&E, along with vital medical equipment to carry out 100 orthopaedic operations, speciatist dressings for skin graftings and infected wounds, various other much needed medical material and pallet of disposable gloves/ masks and surgical gowns. The Surgeons are working in Islamabad and Muzafferabad and are expected to stay there for another two weeks. BPPA have also collected over £20K so far in donations, and pledges are still pouring in, which is kept for a planned rehabilitation programme in the effected areas. So far we have not spent a penny of the donated money on organising and sending the above mentioned teams and material which have all been procured by donations and all the team members are self funding. Please keep your donations coming in
  2. Arrangements are underway to ship a large, all weather proof, tent worth over £30,000 donated by a religious organisation to BPPA, to Pakistan, to set up a field hospital or temporary residence for upto 90 people who have lost their homes. The President's office in Islamabad have agreed to facilitate its shipment through PIA as a matter of urgency free of cost
  3. we have also helped buy a van/ambulance for affected families under care of the Red Crescent of Pakistan
  4. BPPA has also set up a link system to acquire authority letters from the Pakistan high commission for specialists and cargo for earth quake victems, with excellent support from them, especially the military attaché, Col. Haroon Khan
  5. our members belonging to Rawalpindi Medical College Association UK, have generated more than £50 K, sent blankets, equipment and specialists to Pakistan
  6. our members belonging to King Edwards Medical College Association Uk, have sent material, funds and manpower to affected areas; some had gone themselves as they belonged to affected areas and some had close relatives falling victims to this mammoth tragedy
  7. we are in negotiation with Pakistan Red Crescent in arranging training in treatment of psychological trauma for 300 volunteers
  8. we have acquired promise from a large charity run by a former corps commander, to host our training in their hospitals and centres, which are spread all over the northern areas
  9. we have had a good response from members in volunteering to do training and treatment in Pakistan and many have sent their names for them to be slotted in the BPPA's plan for psychological treatment of victims
  10. we discussed with the royal college of psychiatrist UK and had our first meeting with promise for;
    • college's support for volunteers in getting exceptional paid leave from their nhs trusts, if they come via recognised representative psychiatric association (s)
    • college shall encourage Specialist registerar training for one year in affected areas, to work on trauma, if there is local programme that can support this
    • college shall provide training, whenever possible, to volunteers who are able to work in affected areas, via this training department
    • college is fully sympathetic to the plight and our feelings towards the issues of assistance but, college has its limitations and we appreciate its commitment to help. a transitional committee has been set up with two representative associations sitting on it, with college and some other bodies, chaired by the president, Professor Sheila Hollins
    • BPPA has proposed a plan to all associations to help in psychological assistance and relief for the victims. this programme has also been offered to the government of Pakistan, to consider, for the short, medium and long term management, so people do not continue to suffer indefinitely and excessively, especially in their hearts and minds. this programme is called ETRI-Earthquake Trauma Relief Initiative
